Wes Anderson to be honoured with Italy’s Fellini Award
Wes Anderson is to be honoured with Italy’s Fellini Award.
The 56-year-old auteur, who has frequently cited Federico as an influence, will receive the award on 21 April in Rimini at the Teatro Galli.
The prize is awarded by the municipality of Federico’s hometown in collaboration with Cineteca di Bologna, a film preservation institution that also runs the Il Cinema Ritrovato.
It recognises filmmakers who reflect the artistic spirit of Federico Fellini.
The event will include an onstage conversation between Wes and the organisation’s chief, Gianluca Farinelli.
A day earlier, a screening of Wes’ film Moonrise Kingdom will be held at Rimini’s Cinema Fulgor, a venue associated with Federico’s early life.
Organisers said in a statement Wes had created “a unique visual universe”, which has “spawned iconic works such as The Royal Tenenbaums, Moonrise Kingdom, The Grand Budapest Hotel and Asteroid City.”
Rimini Mayor Jamil Sadegholvaad added: “We had invited Wes Anderson to Rimini some time ago to introduce him to the museum project inspired by Federico Fellini.
“But then we also felt this was the perfect opportunity to present him with a recognition that ties in naturally with the artistic and poetic bond that Anderson himself has repeatedly spoken about with regards to Federico Fellini’s work.”
Gianluca added: “Wes Anderson is an artist that is very close to Federico Fellini for his ability to invent and bring original worlds to life… it’s hard to imagine a better candidate for this second edition of the renewed Fellini Award.”
Previous recipients of the Fellini Award include Alfonso Cuaron, Paolo Sorrentino, Terry Gilliam and Martin Scorsese.
Wes is regarded as one of the most distinctive filmmakers of his generation, known for his meticulously crafted visual style and carefully composed storytelling.
He rose to prominence in the late 1990s with Rushmore, which established his signature blend of dry humour and offbeat characters.
The director went on to achieve wider success with The Royal Tenenbaums, earning critical acclaim and an Academy Award nomination for its screenplay.
His films have become known for their symmetrical visuals, ensemble casts and recurring collaborators.
Wes has also found success in animation with Fantastic Mr. Fox and Isle of Dogs, both praised for their craftsmanship. Across his career, he has received multiple Oscar nominations and a reputation for creating instantly recognisable, self-contained cinematic worlds.
